of Cruise Passenger magazine.
It ’s going to be a very exciting
year! Australia is already the world’s
number one continent for cruise growth
and now it stands on the cusp of
surpassing one million cruisers. It ’s an
important milestone. With more and
better ships, almost every cruise industry
professional is convinced that the seven-
figure number will be reached.
For those who love cruising, this means
there will be more choice and better prices.
And you won’t have to pretend you don’t
cruise at dinner parties. You can come out
and say: cruising is cool!
Recent figures from Cruise Lines
International Association (CLIA) show
that passengers spent an average of $371 a
day in Australian ports, helping push the
total contribution to an impressive $3.2
billion last year.
International passengers ring up $756 a
day on accommodation, shopping, dining
and transport before they board their ships.
And during their cruise they spend $204
a day in the ports they visit, mostly on
shopping and tours.
Australian cruisers also like to splurge,
spending an average $450 a day before
they board their ships, as well as $156 a
day in ports.
All of this helps Australia come to grips
with the fact that cruise ships and their
passengers are an enormous opportunity.

Government and the States to build
Brisbane needs new port facilities.
Sydney badly needs more space – and in
a better place. There has been a growing
debate around handing part of Garden
Island, currently occupied by the Navy, to
the cruise industry to accelerate its growth.
Indeed, as I write this the port facilities
are almost overwhelmed by one of the
largest ships built for the Navy – The
Canberra Class Amphibious Assault Ship.
While I am sure they are efficient fighting
machines, they really have no place in the
middle of a thriving metropolis and tourist
centre. Especially when demand for space is
so strong that lines like Royal Caribbean and
Cunard say they cannot squeeze their ships
into our harbour.
Asia is pumping billions into new ports to
attract cruise lines. O ur own industry leaders
like P&O are investing in new port facilities
in areas such as Eden and Moreton Island,
where dollars mean jobs.
The same thing should be happening in
our major cities. The Federal Government
should order the Navy to share Garden

fleet and smart new cruise liners, I know
which I would prefer to see on

represent a major milestone. We
had more entries than ever before.
Perhaps it is a natural
consequence of the increasing
number of Australian cruisers and

ships has obviously resonated with

maintained its top position on river cruises.
